What Is the Shadow

What Is the Shadow

and Why It’s the Missing Link to Your True Potential

What Is the Shadow?

In my coaching practice, I thrive when working with clients in a creative, intuitive, and dynamic way. One of the most powerful tools I use is shadow work, an approach that dives beneath the surface to uncover the hidden aspects of the self. The shadow isn’t good or bad, its just the hidden parts of us that were unacceptable by our care givers. But often, the shadow is the very parts of us holding the greatest potential for freedom, power, and authenticity.

At its core, the shadow is made up of all the parts of ourselves that we have unconsciously disowned, suppressed, or rejected. These can be traits, emotions, desires, or even talents that we learned were “unacceptable” in our early life. Maybe we were told we were “too loud,” “too sensitive,” “too much,” or “not enough.” In those moments, the message was clear: who you are is not okay!!!

In order to survive, we created what Carl Jung called a persona, a psychological mask or an identity designed to help us fit in, stay safe, and be accepted by our families, peers, culture or community. We adapted, we played roles, we perform, and we get very good at it.

But here’s the catch: the persona isn’t who we really are.

The persona is just the version of us that we believed was necessary for survival. Meanwhile, our authentic parts, the wild, tender, creative, angry, powerful, intuitive, bold parts get buried in the shadow. Over time, we polish the persona so much that we start believing it is our true self, even as we feel unfulfilled, stuck, or like something vital is missing.

The Shadow as Treasure Map

One of the most magical truths about the shadow is this: What we repress doesn’t disappear, it waits.

It waits to be seen, to be reclaimed. And often, it shows up in ways we don’t expect—particularly through emotional triggers. The shadow shows up when someone irritates us, frustrates us, or evokes a strong emotional reaction, it’s rarely about them. Instead, it’s often our unconscious (in this case the shadow) projecting a disowned part of ourselves onto them.

Think of the unconscious as a projector, and the world as the screen. What bothers us in others may be pointing to what we’ve rejected in ourselves. This doesn’t mean you are those traits in a negative way, but rather that you’ve split off from an aspect of yourself that needs to be explored, looked at and then integrated.

For example:

  • If someone’s confidence annoys you, it might be reflecting your own suppressed power or desire to be seen.
  • If another’s emotionality overwhelms you, it could mirror your buried sensitivity that was once unsafe to express.

So How Do We Face the Shadow?

Shadow work begins with awareness and curiosity. Instead of running from discomfort or judgment, we turn towards it.  Shadow work begins with looking at our triggers and then tracking them to explore further what is hidden in my shadow that is showing me in this situation, relationship or person.

We may ask ourselves:

  • Where in my body do I feel this trigger, and what memory does it carry?
  • What am I afraid would happen if I fully expressed this part of myself?
  • If I stopped judging this reaction or feeling, what might it be trying to teach me?
  • What am I making this person’s behaviour mean about me?
  • What gift or power might lie beneath this part I’ve rejected?
  • Who would I be if I welcomed all parts of myself—even the ones I’ve disowned?

In my sessions, I guide clients through powerful inner explorations that combine The Adult Chair® model, Jungian tools, drama therapy, and soul-based inquiry. This allows us to meet the shadow not as something to fear, but as a gateway to your brilliance and the shadow is the treasure.

Coming Home to Who You Really Are

Once we identify what’s in our shadow, the work then becomes integrating the shadow.  This doesn’t mean becoming someone else, it means becoming more fully you. We work together to dissolve the mask and allow the rich, multidimensional truth of who you are, to lead your life. This is where clarity, passion, creativity, and power begin to rise. This is where life starts to feel aligned, because you are no longer performing, Yamu are now living.

If you feel stuck, triggered, or unable to move forward, it may be time to explore what’s playing out within. Shadow work isn’t always easy, but it is transformational, liberating, and ultimately life-changing.

It’s time to step beyond the mask and reclaim the truth of who you really are.
