The Power of Patterns

The Power of Patterns

How They Shape Us – and How We Can Shape Them

Have you ever whispered to yourself, “Why does this keep happening to me?”

Maybe it’s the same kind of relationship that leaves you feeling unseen.  Maybe it’s the wave of anxiety that shows up every time you try to rest.  Maybe it’s the inner voice that quietly convinces you you’re not enough, no matter how much you do.

If that feels familiar, you are not alone.

It’s a pattern, a deeply ingrained rhythm that your mind and body have learned to repeat, often without you even realising it.

Patterns are not just habits or behaviours. They are the emotional footprints of your past. The invisible threads woven through your thoughts, reactions and choices. They shape how you love, how you protect yourself, how you move through the world.

They are not here to punish you, they are here to be seen.

The truth is, once you become aware of a pattern, you are no longer trapped inside it. You begin to hold the power to work with it, to reshape it, redirect it, or gently release it.

In my work as a coach, using The Adult Chair model, jungian psychology and powerful tools from Tony Robbins, I’ve witnessed something beautiful over and over again.

When someone begins to see their patterns with compassion, not shame, something shifts. Energy returns and the heart opens and reawakens.

This is the beginning of change.

Let’s take this journey together. Let’s gently explore the patterns that have shaped you and the ones you are now ready to reshape.  Because, your life is not meant to be a loop, it’s meant to be a creation, and you hold the brush.

The Three Stages of a Pattern

1. Pattern Recognition – The Moment You Begin to See

Change always begins with a whisper or a nudge of the soul.  Maybe a quiet knowing that something isn’t working anymore. Maybe it’s the way your heart shuts down when someone gets too close. Maybe it’s the way you overgive, hoping to be loved in return. Or the way you shrink when you want to speak your truth, but you can’t.

It’s easy to think, “That’s just how I am.” But what if it’s not?

What if it’s just a pattern, something you learned to do, not who you truly are?

The first step is not to fix or fight.  The first step is to see.

To slow down. To breathe. To gently become the observer of your own life.

In The Adult Chair model, we call this stepping into the adult/higher self.  The witness, the observer and noticer.  The wise loving part of you that watches without judgment. No blame. No shame. Just awareness.

Ask yourself:

  • What situations keep repeating in my life?
  • When do I feel reactive, small, or overwhelmed?
  • In these moments, am I in my Child, Adolescent, or adult/higher self?

Begin to notice. Journal, write it down without editing. Then take a pause before you react or respond. Watch your life like a movie and ask:

What scene is playing out again? What role am I taking on?

This is not about getting it perfect. It’s about being present.  Because when you can see your pattern from the outside, you’re no longer caught inside it.  And in that moment of awareness, even if it’s subtle, something inside you begins to shift.

The heart opens. The pattern loosens.  And a new possibility begins to emerge.

2. Pattern Creation – Designing What You Want

Once you’ve spotted the patterns that are disempowering you or keeping you at hault, you can then create new ones that align with the result that you want.

This is where your creative power comes alive. Nature shows us this beautifully, from the spiral of a shell to the rhythm of seasons, patterns can be intentional, beautiful, and life giving.

Recognising this gives us an empowering lens through which to view our lives, not as chaotic or stuck, but as works of art in progress.

Creating new patterns is not just about change, it’s about stepping into an empowering partnership with your inner wisdom.

Each time you choose a new response, a new thought, or a new way of being, you are laying down an empowering neural pathway.  One that leads to freedom, authenticity, and alignment.

The act of consciously creating patterns is deeply empowering because it puts you in the driver’s seat of your life, rather than being a passenger of old programming.

Empowering patterns that help you take active steps forward to your desired result, honour your values, support your wellbeing, and reflect who you truly are, not who you learned to be for safety or approval.
